- CROSSWORD CHALLENGE
-
-
- Description:
-
- Crossword Challenge is a collection of fun and challenging
- electronic crossword puzzles for the IBM PC. Puzzles are
- displayed in sharp, high-resolution VGA graphics and can be
- solved "on-screen" interactively without a pencil or paper.
- On-screen feedback tells the user whether their letter and
- word solutions are correct and can even provide letter clues
- when the user is stumped on a word.
-
-
- Hardware requirements:
-
- A hard disk drive, VGA graphic adapter, 640K RAM and DOS
- 3.0 or greater, are required to run Crossword Challenge.
- Although not necessary, a Microsoft compatible mouse is
- highly recommended. A total of 550K of FREE available
- memory is required to run Crossword Challenge without
- difficulties. If your computer has less than 550K, you
- will not be able to access the "Help" screens from within
- the program. One quick way to determine how much available
- memory your computer has is to type CHKDSK at the DOS
- prompt.
-
- 655360 total bytes memory
- 622370 bytes free
-
- Look for the above lines in the output of CHKDSK. The
- "bytes free" tells you how much memory is available for a
- single program. If this number is less than 550,000 bytes,
- you will not be able to access all of the functions of the
- program, although the program will probably run on much
- less than 500K of memory, albeit with degraded performance.
-
-
- Installation:
-
- If your copy of Crossword Challenge was purchased or
- obtained on a floppy disk, you may wish to install the
- program and all related files to your hard disk drive.
- Installing Crossword Challenge to your hard disk will
- GREATLY IMPROVE its performance. A utility has been
- included on disk that will perform the installation. This
- utilty can be run from DOS by typing --> INSTALLC.BAT
-
-
- To start:
-
- To begin Crossword Challenge, set your current working
- directory from DOS to the drive where the Crossword
- Challenge program and data files are located. If the
- program files are located on floppy drive A:, then at
- the DOS prompt enter --> A: press [ENTER]
- then to begin, enter --> XWORD press [ENTER]
-
- If the program and data files are located on drive C, in
- subdirectory XWORD, then at the DOS prompt type the
- following:
-
- C: press [ENTER]
- CHDIR C:\XWORD press [ENTER]
- XWORD press [ENTER]
-
-
- Using the program:
-
- The simple, uncluttered interface should be self-explanatory
- to even novice users. If you are using a mouse, use the
- left mouse button (single click) to activate a button, a
- letter box, or event. The left side of the screen contains
- several large buttons that can be "clicked" or "pushed" to
- activate the corresponding function.
-
-
- Loading a new puzzle:
-
- The fully registered version of Crossword Challenge comes
- with dozens of challenging puzzles. The unregistered,
- evaluation copy comes with only a few puzzles. In both
- cases, puzzles are retrieved randomly and will not repeat
- until all puzzles have been retrieved at least once. In
- other words, if 4 puzzles exist on disk, you will not see
- puzzle #2 again until puzzles #1, #3, and #4 have been
- retrieved first. Again, this is done automatically by the
- program, and the user should not worry about what puzzle
- they are retrieving. This explanation is provided so that
- the curious may understand how puzzles are retrieved and
- displayed to screen and why the unregistered evaluation
- copy eventually runs in a recognizable loop pattern (e.g.,
- 1,4,3,2,1,4,3,2,...1,4,3,2).
-
-
- Saving your work:
-
- If you run out of time before completing an on-screen
- puzzle, select the "Save your work to disk" button. This
- will save all your work to disk, which can later be
- restored by selecting the "Retrieve work and continue"
- button.
-
-
- No mouse?:
-
- For those unfortunate ones without a mouse in their house,
- you can still run Crossword Challenge. The following ALT
- key combinations will enable you access to the menu
- buttons. To use these key combinations, first hold down
- the [ALT] key and then while still holding it down press
- the additional key noted.
-
-
- [ALT] + [H] Display the HELP information screens
-
- [ALT] + [N] Start a NEW puzzle
-
- [ALT] + [R] RETRIEVE any previously saved work
-
- [ALT] + [S] SAVE your work to disk for retrieval later
-
- [ALT] + [X] EXIT the program completely
-
- [ALT] + [P] PRINT the registration form
-
- Use the [TAB] key to switch between "ACROSS" and "DOWN"
- modes.
-
- Note: Mouse users can also access these "hot-keys" if they
- prefer to use the keyboard instead.

-
- What is Shareware?:
-
- Crossword Challenge is distributed as shareware.
- Shareware is a "try before you buy" software marketing
- concept that allows the user to obtain fully functional
- copies of programs for evaluation. The distribution and
- copying fee that you may have paid to obtain this disk DOES
- NOT cover the cost of the software contained on this
- disk. Shareware programs such as Crossword Challenge
- require separate payment to the author if it is found to be
- a useful product and if it is used beyond a reasonable
- evaluation period. Registration is based upon the disk
- size you need. A registration form is provided for you at
- the end of the program. Remember, the program author has
- not received a single penny from the distributor of this
- disk. The only monies we receive are from you the user.
- If users do not support the program, the author goes
- hungry (well, sort of...you know what I mean).
-
-
- Distribution guidelines:
-
- Crossword Challenge is copyrighted shareware software.
- It is NOT public domain. If you find this program
- useful, you are obligated to register your copy with the
- program author. If you do not find this program useful,
- then pass this disk on to a friend. INDIVIDUAL users
- are permitted to make copies of this disk and pass
- them on ONLY IF ALL of the following conditions are
- met:
-
- 1) No changes or alterations are to be made to Crossword
- Challenge - this includes ALL related files on this disk.
-
- 2) No one may sell Crossword Challenge.
-
- 3) Shareware/public domain vendors must insure that the
- program .EXE date stamp is no more than 2 years old. We
- simply want to make sure that you distribute the latest
- version. If you have a copy of this program that is older
- than two years, then written permission must be received
- by the program author BEFORE public distribution. Include
- a self-addressed stamped envelope. Or better, call our BBS.
